Written by Ernest Cline, Ready Player One takes place in the high tech, low life year of 2044. The story follows a teenager named Wade Watts who is hooked on the OASIS, a virtual reality simulator accessible by players using visors and haptic technology such as gloves. Wade spends all his spare time logged on to the OASIS as a “gunter” (a portmanteau of egg hunter), an avatar with the moniker Parzival, reading Halliday’s journal Anorak’s Almanac and researching films, songs, and TV series from the 1980s that were mentioned there, as well as playing classic video games.
The deceased creator of the OASIS, James Halliday, has put his entire estate up as the prize for a contest that requires fast reflexes, a great memory for film quotes, and an encyclopedic knowledge of 1980s trivia. The story follows the adventures of Wade Watts, starting about five years after the announcement, when he discovers one of the three keys pointing to the treasure.
